Salary range

The advertised pay band, which is a decision rather than a measurement.

A range does three jobs at once: it filters out candidates who would decline, satisfies disclosure law where it applies, and anchors negotiation.

Width is more informative than the midpoint. A top more than about 40% above the bottom usually means several levels are being advertised as one requisition.

Ranges routinely omit equity, bonus and location adjustment, so the advertised band is not total compensation.
